Advantages of Wood Pellets
Because pellets are made from wood, they offer the same advantages as firewood – they are a locally renewable and low-cost fuel.
Wood pellets have very low moisture and ash content, so they burn hot and clean. The ash content of fuel pellets is limited to between 1% (high grade) and 3% (standard grade). Regular firewood has a higher ash content due to the bark it contains.
Wood pellets are small and easy to handle.The pellets are virtually dust-free and have no bark. Many stoves that burn pellets have a hopper with a feed screw that automatically feeds pellets into the stove when fuel is needed. Larger stoves have larger storage silos that also automatically feed fuel into the stove when needed.

Both systems require little maintenance because pellets burn very cleanly.
Pellets have many "green" properties. Pellets are often made from wood processing byproducts, such as sawdust, thus turning a potentially waste material into a valuable product.
In recent years, low-quality trees from forest thinning and recycling operations have also begun to be used. Pellets have much lower moisture content than firewood and are denser, making them more efficient to transport.
In terms of their contribution to global climate change, wood and wood pellets are "carbon neutral"-all the carbon dioxide released when wood is burned is absorbed from the atmosphere as the tree grows, a key advantage.
