To understand how a wood chipper works, let's break the process down into its core components.
Feed Hopper The process starts with the feed hopper, which is the entry point for the wood or organic material. This is where you'll load the branches, twigs, and other debris to be chopped. The feed hopper directs the material toward the shredding mechanism.

Product Analysis
At the heart of a wood chipper is the chipping mechanism, which typically consists of a high-speed rotor and sharp blades or knives. The blades of the rotor are designed to cut and shred the wood as it passes through. There are two main types of chipping mechanisms:
– Disc chippers: A disc chipper has a large rotating disc with blades attached to it. As the wood enters the disc, the blades chop it into pieces. Disc chippers are known for their efficiency and are often used in commercial and industrial settings.
– Drum chippers: This type of chipper has a drum-shaped rotor with blades inside. As the wood enters the drum rotor, the blades chop it into small pieces. Drum chippers are often used in small, portable wood chippers designed for homeowners.
Chute and discharge
After being shredded by the rotor, the wood chips are directed through a chute and discharged from the machine. The size of the wood chips can usually be adjusted by changing the settings on the machine. Some wood chippers have a discharge port that can be pointed in a specific direction, making it easier to collect the wood chips into a bag or trailer.
When you feed the chips into the wood chipper, remember that it is essential to feed the green branches along with the dead branches, as the moisture in the green branches helps lubricate the blades of the chipper. This will ensure that the process goes smoothly. Always use a long stick to push in any difficult-to-pass materials.
Instead of standing in front of the hopper, you can stand to the side. You need to avoid serious injuries when the chips spill forward and catch you off guard.
