Processing Damp Wood Pellets: Re-Conditioning Guide

Damp wood pellets - pellets that have absorbed moisture and become soft and slightly sticky, but are not yet severely clumped - should never be fed directly into a wood chip fuel pellet machine: the moisture makes them stick and block the die, and the finished pellets come out loose and weak. This guide explains the three-step re-conditioning process.

 

1. Pre-Treatment: Dry and Sieve First

Spread the slightly damp pellets in a ventilated area and let them dry for 1–2 hours, turning them 1–2 times so some surface moisture evaporates. Then sieve out the severely clumped and powdery material, leaving loose pellets - this prevents clumped pellets from entering the equipment and causing blockages. If the pellets are slightly clumped, gently crush them by hand and sieve again so that everything entering the machine is loose. After pre-treatment, judge by touch: if the pellets feel dry and loose, they are ready for processing.

 

2. Adjust the Flat-Die Pellet Machine Parameters

 

  • Feed speed: compared with dry pellets, reduce the feed speed by 30–40%, using low-speed, uniform feeding to prevent pellets from accumulating and sticking together in the pressing chamber. Control the speed through the feed-motor frequency - for example, if the original frequency was 50 Hz, adjust it to 30–35 Hz.
  • Pressing temperature: increase it by 5–10 °C. For example, if the original processing temperature for dry pellets was 80 °C, adjust it to 85–90 °C. The higher temperature evaporates the moisture quickly and enhances the pellets' viscosity, improving the forming rate.
  • Pressing pressure: increase it appropriately by 5–10% so the pellets are fully extruded and formed.

 

3. Trial Run and Gradual Recovery

First, run the machine unloaded for 3–5 minutes and check that the equipment operates normally with no abnormal noise. Then feed a small amount of the pre-treated damp pellets at low speed and observe the pellet quality at the outlet - density, surface and uniformity. Once the output is stable and well formed, gradually increase the feed rate back toward normal production. If the pellets still stick or block, pause, clean the die, and re-check the moisture level before continuing.

 

4. When Not to Re-Process

Severely clumped, moldy or heavily wet pellets should not be forced through the machine - break them up and dry them thoroughly, or return them to the raw-material stream for crushing and re-pelletizing. Re-conditioning works only for slightly damp, still-intact pellets; beyond that point the material needs the full raw-material treatment.
