5 Tips to Prevent Pellets from Absorbing Moisture in Small Home-Use Biomass Wood Pellet Mills

The first preventative measure: Proper moisture control during storage is the most crucial step. Choose a dry, well-ventilated, and dark warehouse to store fuel pellets. The warehouse floor should be level, and the pellet bags should be elevated 10-15 cm using wooden blocks to prevent contact with ground moisture. The pellet bags should be tightly sealed and wrapped in plastic film to prevent moisture from entering when air humidity is high. During rainy days or the rainy season, place desiccants or dehumidifiers in the warehouse to control the air humidity below 60%. If the pellets are in bulk, use sealed storage silos. The top of the silo should be rainproof, and a discharge valve should be installed at the bottom for easy access, avoiding frequent opening that could allow moisture to enter. One user previously stored pellets in a regular warehouse, which frequently became damp during the rainy season. After switching to sealed storage silos and installing dehumidifiers, the problem of damp pellets was completely solved.

The second tip: Control the moisture content of the pellets during processing to reduce the probability of moisture absorption at the source. When processing wood pellets with a biomass wood pellet mill, ensure the raw material moisture content is within the standard range of 12%-15%, and the processed pellets have a moisture content controlled at 10%-12%. Pellets with this moisture content have high hardness and are less prone to moisture absorption. After processing, do not immediately package and store the pellets. First, cool the pellets to room temperature to prevent internal moisture condensation and subsequent dampness. Cooling can be done using the matching cooling machine or naturally in a well-ventilated area for at least 2 hours.

The third tip: Install a moisture-proof device at the Wood Chip Fuel Pellet Machine feed inlet. Install a simple rain shelter and sealing cover at the feed inlet to prevent rainwater or moisture from entering during rainy or humid weather. Simultaneously, install a humidity detection device to monitor the humidity of the pellets entering the equipment in real time. If the humidity exceeds the standard, immediately stop feeding to prevent damp pellets from entering the equipment and causing blockages and wear. Additionally, wrap the feed pipe with insulation cotton to prevent external humid air from entering the pipe and causing the pellets to become damp and clump together.

The fourth tip: Regularly maintain the equipment to improve its moisture resistance. Regularly inspect the seals of the Industrial Wood Pellet machine, such as the feed inlet gasket and the sealing ring of the pressing chamber access door. Replace any aged or damaged parts promptly to prevent humid air from entering the equipment and causing rust. Regularly clean the heat sinks and electrical control cabinet to prevent dust accumulation from affecting heat dissipation. Place a desiccant inside the electrical control cabinet to prevent short circuits caused by moisture. Before long-term shutdown, thoroughly clean any residual pellets from the equipment, apply anti-rust oil to core components such as the pressure rollers and molds, and cover them with dust covers to prevent moisture and rust.

Fifth tip: Plan usage reasonably and avoid long-term pellet storage. The longer fuel pellets are stored, the higher the probability of moisture absorption. It is recommended to plan procurement and processing quantities according to production needs and use them up within 3 months if possible. If long-term storage is necessary, process or purchase during the dry season, strengthen sealing and moisture-proof measures during storage, and regularly check the condition of the pellets. If slight moisture is found, dry them promptly.
