How to Use a Wood Chip Pellet Making Machine Correctly: Start-up, Feeding and Shutdown

Introduction
Correct operation of a wood chip pellet making machine is mostly about three things: setting the roller-to-die contact correctly, feeding material with the right moisture content, and following a proper run-in and shutdown routine. Machines fail not because they are badly built but because these three basics are skipped, and each one is simple to get right. This guide explains the start-up, feeding and shutdown procedures in practical terms.
Set the pressure roller to just touch the die surface before the first run; no contact means no production.
Keep material moisture at 12%-15%; too dry produces loose powder, too wet clogs the die and stops the machine.
Run in new rollers and dies with oily or high-lignin material for about half an hour before full production.

1. Initial Roller Adjustment
Before the first run, the pressure roller must be set so that it just touches the die surface. If the roller does not touch the die, no material is compressed and the machine produces nothing. With the machine stopped and powered off, adjust the roller screws until the roller contacts the die, then lock the screws. Confirm the setting by turning the die by hand if possible, and re-check the contact whenever output drops, because wear changes the gap over time.
2. Material Preparation and Moisture Control
The moisture content of the material is the single most important factor in pellet formation. For typical wood, sawdust and straw feedstocks, the moisture content should be in the range of about 12%-15%, with the optimum varying by material. Material that is too dry produces loose, powdery pellets; material that is too wet cannot be compressed, because it slips in the die, clogs the holes and stops the machine. If the material is too dry, add water gradually and mix thoroughly until it feels slightly damp but not wet. If it is too wet, spread it out to air-dry before processing. Always test a small batch before full production, because moisture judgment by feel takes practice.
3. Start-up and Run-in
Start the machine idle and confirm normal rotation and noise, then feed material slowly at first. For the run-in of new rollers and dies, many manufacturers recommend feeding a small amount of oily or high-lignin material, or a mixture with a little vegetable oil, and grinding for about half an hour to seat the working surfaces. After normal discharge begins, gradually increase the feed rate to the normal level. Watch the output: if pellets are loose, the material is too dry or the roller gap needs adjustment; if the machine vibrates or slows, the feed is too fast or the material contains oversized pieces.
4. Feeding Methods
Material can be fed manually, by screw conveyor, or by belt conveyor. Manual feeding suits small machines and short runs. Screw conveyors give a steady, controlled feed for medium output. Belt conveyors suit larger, continuous operation. Whatever the method, keep the feed rate uniform, because surging causes unstable pellet quality and overload. A steady feed keeps the die fully loaded without tripping the motor protection.
5. Shutdown and Storage
Stop feeding first and let the machine run briefly to clear the die, then switch off and disconnect power. Clean residual material from the die area after stopping, so dried material does not block the die holes at the next start. For short idle periods, leave the roller settings as they are. For long-term storage, release the spring preload on the pressure roller so the roller and die are not under constant load, and store the machine in a dry, covered place. Do not discard abrasive or oily run-in material carelessly; store it for the next run-in if the machine will be idle for a long time, which also keeps the die holes from clogging on restart.
6. Maintenance Notes
Check the roller bearings and lubricate them according to the manual, inspect the roller and die surfaces for wear, and clean the machine thoroughly after each session. Regular maintenance is what keeps a wood chip pellet machine producing consistent pellets over years of use. The two wear items, roller and die, deserve a monthly inspection because catching uneven wear early avoids a full tooling replacement.
